The topology represents your actual physical electrical infrastructure — fuse boards, distribution groups, and individual charge points — as a tree structure inside the Energy Portal.
Getting the topology right is the foundation for load management and smart charging. Power constraints cascade down the tree, and the optimiser respects every limit at every level.
What is a node?
A node is an electrical grouping in your topology. It can represent:
- A main fuse or distribution board
- A sub-distribution board or circuit group
- A logical grouping of charge points (e.g. ‘Car park level 2’)
Nodes form a parent-child tree. Each node can have a current limit (amps), a power limit (kW), and child nodes or EVSEs attached to it. Limits set on a parent node apply to the total load across all its children.
Building your topology
Canvas view
The canvas gives you a visual, drag-and-drop interface to build and reorganise your topology. Drag nodes to change their parent, or drag EVSEs between nodes.
Tree view
The tree view shows the same structure as a collapsible list — useful for sites with many levels or a large number of EVSEs.
Topology search
Use the search box to find any node or EVSE by name across the full topology.
Adding a node
- Open the site and go to Topology
- Select the parent node you want to add under
- Choose Add node from the context menu
- Set a name, and optionally a current or power limit
Adding an EVSE to a node
An EVSE (charge point) must be attached to exactly one node.
- In the topology, select the node you want the EVSE to belong to
- Choose Add EVSE
- Select the charge point from your inventory
Each EVSE inherits the power constraints of its parent node. You can also set per-EVSE limits that apply in addition to the node limit.
Live updates
The topology canvas updates in real time. Changes made by other team members or changes triggered by the system appear without requiring a page refresh.
